FREE INDEED
If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
John 8:36
FREE INDEED
Freedom is a powerful concept, often associated with the hard-fought battles that many have undertaken to secure civil liberties. Yet, while we might celebrate these freedoms, deeper bondage affects the majority of humanity—bondage to sin.
Sin is a relentless taskmaster who not only poisons our hearts and minds but also wreaks havoc on our souls. Someone once said, "Sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you'll ever want to pay."
Many people have experienced the harsh reality of sin in their lives. They have watched their loved ones suffer because of it, seen their marriages fall apart, and observed how wealth and greed lead to self-destruction. Ultimately, they find that sin has never been a friend. However, there is hope in Jesus Christ, who offers a way out of the bondage of sin and a path to true freedom.
The Promise of Freedom (John 8:31-36)
In John 8:31-36, we find Jesus teaching in the Temple during the Feast of Tabernacles, a significant time of remembrance for the Jewish people. They gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate God's provision during the Israelites' wilderness journey and to anticipate the coming of the Messiah. Little did they realize the Messiah was already among them, offering them liberation from their spiritual chains.
Jesus lays out a critical distinction in His teaching: the difference between true disciples and those who merely follow outwardly. He emphasizes the importance of abiding in His Word—living, learning, and remaining in it. When we genuinely engage our lives with the truth of God's Holy Word, that knowledge leads to liberation. One may ask, "How?".
Jesus promises that knowing the truth—not just hearing it, but truly understanding it—will set us free. The original text uses the Greek word "eleutheroo," meaning to liberate. This indicates a dynamic freedom that removes the shackles of sin, which the Bible warns leads to death (Romans 6:23, "For the wages of sin is death...").
The Reality of Sin (John 8:33-35)
Many individuals remain unaware of their bondage to sin. This denial can be likened to a dog chained in its yard, seemingly content until the moment it tries to reach its owner. Only then does it encounter the harsh reality of its confinement. Similarly, people often live in spiritual bondage without recognizing their need for escape until they try to.
The Jews in Jesus' time claimed they had never been in bondage despite a long history of captivity by foreign powers like Egypt, Babylon, Persia, and even Rome. This illustrates the power of self-deception in the unredeemed heart. Their denial mirrors our own struggles; we often overlook the ways in which sin controls our lives.
The Biblical truth is clear: "All have sinned and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). Sin entraps us, making us slaves to its influence. We lose our freedom when we allow sin to dictate our lives.
The Power of the Son (John 8:36)
The key to freedom lies in Jesus Christ. He offers us liberation—"If the Son sets you free, you will be FREE INDEED." The word "free" here is another Greek word, "eleutheros," which denotes a positional change. This illustrates that through Christ, we transition from being slaves to sin to being FREEBORN in Him.
The power of the Son is unparalleled. He alone has the authority to declare us free from the chains of sin. In Him, we can do what we cannot do alone - "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me" (Philippians 4:13).
Psalm 105:41 states, "He opened the rock, and the waters gushed out; they ran in the dry places like a river." Just as God provided water in the desert for the Israelites, He now offers us the gift of true freedom from sin through His Son, Jesus Christ.
In Christ, I am FREE INDEED—truly and fully liberated. This freedom extends beyond the mere absence of chains; it's about a relationship with the truth that empowers and transforms one's life. Don't hesitate to claim this freedom. The time to act is now. Today is the day of true freedom.
